We just got two new rabbits a few days ago. And they're sick. They both have colds. Cathy had them in with all our other rabbits, at least the inside ones, and now they may get sick. Groan! At least Sapphire and Cinders probably won't. They're outside.

The woman we spoke to about them suggested we give them antibiotics for ten days to kill the infection. She has been doing this for ten years, she said, and she's learned a thing or two. Yeah, right! Although a cold can be fatal to rabbits. You do have to be careful.

Cathy and I searched online and found several herbs that could be used. You should never use an antibiotic for a virus because, for one thing, it won't work. For another, it causes bacteria to adapt and create superbugs.

One of the herbs I found was the common dandelion. In fact I found so much information about the nutritional benefits of the dandelion, I went right out, in the dark, and picked some for my dinner.

A side note to any vegans who might be reading, it turns out dandelions are supposed to be high in vitamin B12. A lack of B12 is highly problematic in people and can cause brain damage and a host of other maladies. And it's common in vegans because it's hard to get enough B12 in veggies.

Anyway, we intend to give the sick rabbits dandelions in the morning to make them well again. Antibiotics can be a good thing, but only used on an emergency basis and ONLY on bacteria, not viruses.
