Much has happened since my last entry. My associate's injured Silver Fox buck passed on, I believe partially due to his illness and partially due to the medication. No, I'm not blaming the veterinarian. I simply believe the poor buck was too weak to adapt to the medication. Now we are searching for a new buck of breeding age to replace him, although he can certainly never be replaced totally!
We had three litters born, of which about half of the kits passed on due to becoming overheated on the 95F(35C) degree day in which they were born, and a couple due to unknown causes after I had left for a medical appointment. I can only imagine what happened as one had a compound fracture in its leg. I had to remove the last two from my New Zealand doe and the one with the fracture died shortly afterword. I would have likely had to put it down if it hadn't anyway. It was too complicated to treat and the kit was weak. Now my New Zealand only has one left, which is being fostered my my Mini Lop doe along with the Mini Lop's other five.
There are no signs of the fur mites now and the affected rabbits' skin seems to be clearing. They have some time before they will be bred now, anyway, as the hottest part of the season is quickly approaching.
Even after approximately five years, there are still things to learn and hard lessons to take. The remaining kits seem healthy, so I certainly hope we have no more fatalities.
